The Isle of Man Government’s Waste Plan, approved in 2000, identified a hierarchy for dealing with the island’s waste – to reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover energy through energy-from-waste, minimising the amount of waste being sent to landfill and following European Best Practice.
To help achieve this, a contract was awarded to SUEZ Isle of Man (formerly SITA Isle of Man) to design, build, and operate an energy-from-waste facility to divert waste from the island’s landfill sites.
The facility was completed in 2004 and now processes all of the island’s domestic and commercial residual waste, generating 10% of the island’s electricity. Its state-of-the-art technology and onsite laboratory ensure the highest environmental and operational standards are maintained.
